How Often Should You Get Your Teeth Cleaned?

Team General Dentistry

Brush, floss, rinse. You’ve got the basics covered and you make sure to follow this routine daily, so you’re covered when it comes to keeping your teeth clean, right? Not so fast. Excellent oral hygiene practices at home are just the start of truly caring for your teeth and gums.

Keep Your Teeth Healthy With Regular Cleanings

So how often should you get your teeth cleaned professionally? The American Dental Association recommends that patients get a professional cleaning from a qualified dentist every six months. These visits should include not just a cleaning, but a complete oral exam as well in order to ensure your teeth are free of plaque and to keep you on track with prevention of cavities and gum disease.

At Chagrin Falls Dental, we are here to help you understand how to optimize your oral health. We are an all-in-one dental practice dedicated to providing comprehensive dental services, including teeth cleaning and exams. We focus on the needs of each patient to provide a comfortable patient experience in a relaxing and modern environment.

What to Expect at Your Cleaning and Exam

When you realize all that takes place during a comprehensive cleaning and exam, it makes sense why it’s so important to schedule these visits twice a year. Generally, the exam is structured so your dentist can detect, both through visual examination and x-rays, any abnormalities with your oral health.

X-rays are taken to go beyond what can be observed with just the eye, and they help to identify cavities and other concerns such as with existing dental restorations, gum or bone recession, or gum disease.

For the dental cleaning portion of the visit, special instruments are used to gently remove any plaque and tartar that may have accumulated on the teeth. Larger pieces of tartar are loosened with an ultrasonic device that puts out vibrations and is cooled by water. Hand tools are then used to scrape smaller deposits and smooth the surface of your teeth. After all the build-up has been cleaned away, teeth are polished and left with a smooth surface that helps ward off any new plaque and tartar.

When you visit us at Chagrin Falls Dental regularly, we can help ensure you continue to enjoy a healthy, beautiful mouth. After all, your oral health has a direct link to your overall health, so keeping up with exams and cleanings twice a year gives you an advantage in avoiding gum disease and potential related concerns for your overall health.
