When a tooth is damaged or decayed, we use restorative dentistry to restore its function, appearance, and strength. Restorative procedures performed at the right time can lower the likelihood of needing more extensive dental work in the future.

Chagrin Falls Dental performs the following restorative dental procedures:

Composite Fillings

Unlike the metal fillings of the past, composite fillings use a tooth-colored resin to restore the appearance of teeth with cavities, in addition to repairing the structural damage. The dental filling process involves removing areas of decay, then using a tooth-colored composite material to fill in the areas that were removed and hardening it with a curing light. This procedure is completed in a single visit to our office.

Inlays and Onlays

Sometimes a tooth has more damage than can be repaired with a composite filling, but not enough to justify placing a dental crown. In these cases, inlays and onlays are used instead. Also known as partial crowns, these restorations are made with porcelain or gold and replace the missing tooth structure.

Crowns

Crowns are dental restorations that completely cover the outside of a tooth that is damaged or decayed in order to preserve the remaining healthy tooth structure and restore function. Dental crowns involve two visits to our office, one in which your tooth is prepared for the crown and a second in which your permanent crown is placed.

Dental Bridges

Bridges replace one or more missing teeth without requiring a dental implant or denture. Although there are a few different types of bridges, the most common one involves placing two crowns on the teeth adjacent to the space and using these crowns to hold in place a span of prosthetic teeth.

Implant Restorations

Dental implants are considered the best replacement for missing teeth because they are the only solution that addresses bone loss in the jaw. Most dental implants have three components: a biocompatible titanium implant post, a restoration to replace the missing tooth, and an abutment that connects the two.

Dentures

Dentures replace multiple missing teeth in a single upper or lower arch. Unlike bridges, dentures don’t rely on existing tooth structure for support. We offer full and partial dentures that can be traditional (held in place with adhesive) or implant-supported; implant-supported dentures can be removable or fixed.

Frequently Asked Questions About Restorative Dentistry

What is restorative dental care?

Restorative dental care refers to procedures that replace missing teeth or repair damaged teeth. These procedures restore function and strength to the bite and, when materials are chosen with aesthetics in mind, they can also restore the appearance of the smile.

Can dentists rebuild teeth?

Yes, we can usually rebuild teeth that have been fractured, cracked, worn down, or otherwise damaged with dental crowns, inlays, or onlays, depending on the extent of damage. There are some circumstances in which a tooth cannot be repaired, in which case a bridge, dental implant, or denture may be needed.

Is a crown or filling better?

Although many patients would prefer getting a filling over a dental crown, when we recommend a dental crown it’s because there is simply too much decay to successfully repair with a dental filling. We don’t want to give you a restoration that will fail or break, leaving your tooth in worse shape than it was before your treatment!

Is a bridge cheaper than an implant?

Yes, a traditional dental bridge is less expensive than a dental implant. Dental implants cost more because they replace the roots of missing teeth in addition to the visible portion above the gum line. Because your dental implants and jaw fuse together, they’re a restoration that’s meant to last a lifetime.
